Behind the Scenes
Private Chef Cleanup: What Happens After Service
September 8, 2026 · 7 min read
One of the most common questions I get: "Do you clean up after?" The short answer is yes. But there's more to it than just washing dishes.
Let me walk you through what actually happens after the last course is served, and what you can expect when you hire a private chef.
What's Included in "Cleanup"
When I quote a private chef service, cleanup is always included in the price. Here's what that means:
All Cooking Equipment & Tools
Every pot, pan, knife, cutting board, and utensil I brought gets washed, dried, and packed. If I used your equipment (sometimes clients have specific pans they prefer), those get cleaned too.
This includes:
- All cookware (pots, pans, skillets)
- Prep equipment (bowls, measuring tools, mandolins)
- Knives and cutting boards
- Serving platters and utensils
- Any portable equipment (burners, sous vide, etc.)
Kitchen Surfaces
Your kitchen should look better than when I arrived. I clean:
- All countertops (wiped down, sanitized)
- Stovetop (including burner grates if used)
- Sink (scrubbed clean, no food debris)
- Splashback (any oil splatters removed)
- Floor around work area (swept, spot mopped if needed)
Rubbish
All food waste, packaging, and prep scraps get bagged and taken to your bin. I'll even take the rubbish out to your outdoor bin if you prefer.

To be completely transparent, here's what I don't do (though I'm happy to arrange these for an additional fee):
Guest Dishes
Plates, glasses, and cutlery your guests used during the meal are left for you. Why? Because many hosts prefer to run these through their own dishwasher at their own pace, or have staff handling it.
That said, I always:
- Stack plates neatly
- Scrape food waste into the bin
- Group glassware together
- Make it as easy as possible for you or your dishwasher
If you want full table service with cleanup of guest dishes, just ask. I can arrange that with additional service staff for larger events.
Dining Room Setup/Breakdown
Table setting, chair arrangement, and dining decor are typically handled by the host or an event coordinator. I focus on the kitchen and food presentation.
Deep Cleaning
I clean as I go (professional habit), but I'm not scrubbing your oven, reorganizing cupboards, or doing a full kitchen deep clean. Your kitchen gets restored to its original state, but I'm not a cleaning service.
The Timeline: When Does Cleanup Happen?
Here's how the evening typically flows:
18:00 - Arrival & Setup
Unpack equipment, organize mise en place, start prep work.
19:30 - Service Begins
First course served. I start cleaning between courses.
During Service (19:30-22:00)
This is key: I clean as I cook. By the time dessert is served, 80% of the cleanup is already done.
22:00-22:30 - Final Cleanup
Last dishes washed, surfaces wiped, equipment packed.
22:30 - Departure
Kitchen spotless, you're still at the table with your guests enjoying coffee or wine.
Pro tip: Some clients like me to leave quietly while they're still dining. Others prefer a quick chat at the end. Your call—just let me know your preference.
The "Clean As You Go" Philosophy
In professional kitchens, we have a rule: If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean.
This mentality carries over to private chef work. While a sauce is reducing or protein is resting, I'm washing bowls, wiping surfaces, and organizing. By the time your meal is finished, there's barely any cleanup left to do.
This is one of the biggest differences between a professional chef and a home cook. We're trained to maintain a clean, organized workspace throughout service—not deal with a mountain of dishes at the end.
Multi-Day Events: How Cleanup Changes
For villa stays or multi-day private chef bookings (common in Cascais, Comporta, or holiday rentals), the cleanup process is slightly different:
- Daily cleanup: After each meal, kitchen is fully cleaned and reset for the next service.
- Equipment storage: My gear stays in a designated area (we discuss this upfront).
- Waste management: Daily rubbish removal to outdoor bins.
- Final cleanup: On the last day, everything is removed and kitchen is deep-cleaned.
For extended bookings, I often coordinate with villa housekeeping staff to ensure seamless kitchen management.

Contact MeWhat If Your Kitchen Doesn't Have a Dishwasher?
No problem. I'm used to washing dishes by hand—most villa kitchens don't have dishwashers anyway.
Hand washing might add 15-20 minutes to the cleanup timeline, but it's factored into my service. Your kitchen will still be spotless before I leave.
Large Events: Bringing Additional Help
For events over 12 guests, I typically bring a sous chef or service assistant. This affects cleanup in a few ways:
- Faster cleanup: Two or three people working means we're usually done within 30 minutes of dessert.
- Full table service: With extra staff, I can include guest dish cleanup in the package.
- Higher efficiency: One person cooks, one person cleans, one person serves—military precision.
This is included in the quote for larger events, so you're not paying separately for cleanup staff.
The Psychology of a Clean Kitchen
Here's something I've learned after 20+ years in this industry: A clean kitchen is part of the luxury experience.
When you hire a private chef, you're not just paying for food. You're paying for the gift of time, the absence of stress, and the ability to be a guest at your own event.
Waking up the next morning to a spotless kitchen (no crusty pans, no lingering smells, no dishes piled in the sink) is one of the most satisfying parts of the private chef experience. It's the moment you realize: "I threw an incredible dinner party, and I don't have to deal with any of this."
What You Should Do Before I Arrive
To make cleanup efficient, here's what helps:
- Clear counter space: I need room to work. Move appliances, mail, and clutter.
- Empty your sink: Makes it easier for me to clean as I go.
- Show me the rubbish: Where do bins go? Recycling? Compost?
- Point out the dishwasher: Any quirks I should know? (Some require a specific loading method.)
I'll usually ask these questions during our pre-event consultation, but it never hurts to have a quick walkthrough when I arrive.
What Happens to Leftovers?
Good question. Here's my standard approach:
Food you paid for is yours. I'll pack any leftovers into containers (you provide these, or I can bring them for a small fee). Label them with what they are and storage instructions.
Excess prep ingredients. Sometimes I over-order slightly to ensure quality. Any unopened or unused items (bottles of wine, specialty ingredients) are left for you unless you specifically don't want them.
Rubbish from prep. Gets bagged and binned. You won't find vegetable trimmings or packaging left behind.
Special Requests
Want something specific? Just ask. I've had clients request:
- "Can you load the dishwasher before you leave?" Yes, if there's time and your dishwasher isn't running.
- "Can you take all the rubbish with you?" If it fits in my van, sure.
- "Can you leave recipe cards for the dishes you made?" Absolutely. I love doing this for special events.
- "Can you stay for an extra 30 minutes to help with guest dishes?" For an additional fee, yes.
Private chef service is just that—private. If there's something that would make your experience better, speak up.

Book Your EventFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need to provide cleaning supplies?
I bring my own kitchen cleaner, sanitizer, and cloths. You don't need to provide anything unless you have specific products you prefer I use (e.g., eco-friendly cleaners).
What if something breaks during service?
Accidents happen. I'm insured for this. If I break a plate or glass, I'll replace it or reimburse you. In 10+ years of private chef work, this has happened twice—we're very careful with your belongings.
Can you clean the oven if we use it for the meal?
I'll wipe down the oven interior if there are any spills or splatters. Deep oven cleaning (baked-on grime from prior use) isn't part of standard service, but I can arrange this separately if needed.
What about food allergies or dietary restrictions during cleanup?
If you have severe allergies (e.g., nut allergy), I ensure cross-contamination is avoided during cleanup. I'll thoroughly sanitize all surfaces and utensils, and use separate cleaning cloths if necessary.
Do you use eco-friendly cleaning products?
Yes, I primarily use biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners. If you have specific preferences (or sensitivities to certain products), let me know in advance and I'll adjust accordingly.
What if I want you to leave early (before full cleanup)?
If you prefer to handle cleanup yourself (perhaps you have a cleaning service coming the next day), we can arrange that. Just communicate this beforehand so I can adjust the quote if necessary.
Can you clean the dining room table after guests leave?
Not typically part of standard service, but I'm happy to clear and wipe down the table for an additional small fee. Or if we've built a good working relationship, I'll often just do it as a courtesy.
How long does full cleanup usually take?
For a standard 6-8 guest dinner, about 30-45 minutes after the last course is served. For larger events with extra staff, we can knock this out in 20-30 minutes. Remember, I'm cleaning throughout service, so it's not a massive pile-up at the end.
Final Thoughts
When you hire a private chef, cleanup isn't an afterthought—it's part of the service. I take as much pride in leaving your kitchen immaculate as I do in plating a perfect dish.
The goal is simple: You should wake up the next morning, walk into your kitchen, and smile. No stress. No mess. Just the memory of an incredible evening.
That's what makes private chef service worth it.
