Restaurants are fine for most dinners. But anniversaries aren't most dinners. They're the one night a year where the whole point is to feel like nobody else exists. And that's hard to pull off when you're sitting three feet from a table of six celebrating someone's birthday with sparklers and a rendition of "Parabens a Voce."

A private chef anniversary dinner in Lisbon removes every distraction. No reservations to chase. No rushed courses because the kitchen needs your table back. No background noise competing with the conversation you actually came for. Just a custom menu, cooked in your space, at your pace, by someone who does this for a living.

I'm Justin Jennings, the inaugural World Cook Champion and a MICHELIN Guide Selected chef running private dining experiences across Lisbon and the Portuguese coast. Anniversary dinners are some of my favourite bookings because the brief is clear: make it unforgettable. That's a challenge I enjoy.

Why a Private Chef Beats a Restaurant for Anniversaries

I've cooked in restaurants for over 20 years. I know exactly what happens behind the scenes on a busy Saturday night when a couple walks in hoping for something special. The kitchen is slammed. Your "special occasion" is one of 80 covers that night. The waiter has seven other tables. That intimate moment you imagined? It's competing with a room full of other people's evenings.

A private chef anniversary dinner flips every one of those constraints:

  • You're the only table. The menu, the timing, the pacing, everything is designed around you. Not you plus 79 other covers.
  • No time limit. Restaurant seatings run 90 minutes to two hours. A private dinner runs as long as you want. Three hours, four hours, whatever the evening calls for.
  • Your space, your atmosphere. Candles on your terrace overlooking the Tagus. Your favourite playlist. Your living room with the doors open to the garden. The setting is yours to choose.
  • The menu tells your story. I've built anniversary menus around the meal a couple shared on their first date, the cuisine from the country where they got engaged, even a dish from a grandmother's recipe. Try getting that at a restaurant.

What a Private Chef Anniversary Dinner Looks Like

The format depends on what you want. Some couples prefer an intimate five-course tasting menu. Others want something more relaxed, with sharing plates and wine flowing freely. Both work. Here's the general shape of the evening:

Before You Arrive Home

I arrive 2-2.5 hours before service. If one partner is organising a surprise, this is when the setup happens. I bring all the ingredients, prep in your kitchen quietly, and get everything staged so that when service begins, courses flow seamlessly. Some clients go out for a walk or a drink while I set up. Others prefer to be home, and that's fine too. The kitchen work is unobtrusive.

The Opening

A welcome drink and an amuse-bouche to set the tone. Something small but precise. Maybe a prawn cracker with yuzu kosho and fresh crab. Or a shot glass of chilled gazpacho with smoked paprika oil. It signals that tonight is different from every other dinner you've had this year.

The Main Event

Five to seven courses, each one served when you're ready. Not when the kitchen decides. I watch the pace of the conversation. If you're deep in a story, dessert waits. If there's a natural pause, the next course appears. That responsiveness is something no restaurant can offer because no restaurant has the luxury of one table.

Each course gets a brief introduction. What it is, where the ingredients came from, why I chose it for your menu. Then I disappear back to the kitchen. This isn't a performance. It's a dinner for two that happens to have a professional chef making it happen.

The Finish

Dessert, petit fours, and whatever you want to linger over. Coffee, digestif, cheese. After the last course, I clean the kitchen, pack up, and leave. Most couples barely notice because they're still at the table. That's the goal.

Menu Ideas for Anniversary Dinners

Every anniversary menu is custom. But to give you a sense of what's possible, here are three approaches I build regularly:

The Classic Tasting Menu

Seven courses of refined technique. Think prawn carpaccio with mango and avocado, followed by saffron risotto with slow-braised meat, then a seared duck breast with seasonal puree, building to a chocolate dessert with salted caramel and a final petit four. Each course is designed to progress in intensity, finishing on something sweet and memorable.

This format suits couples who love fine dining and want to experience it without the restaurant formality. You can eat in your pyjamas if you like. Nobody's judging.

The Story Menu

This is where it gets personal. I've built menus around a couple's history: the Thai curry they ate on honeymoon, the steak they shared on their first date, the pasta dish from the trip to Italy where one of them proposed. Each course represents a moment. It takes more planning, but the result is something no restaurant could ever replicate.

If you want a story menu, share the details when you enquire. Give me the memories and I'll turn them into courses.

The Sharing Table

Not every anniversary needs to be formal. Some couples prefer a table covered with beautiful food, served family-style. Gyoza with cabbage and soy. A whole grilled fish with lemon and herbs. A meat board with condiments and sides. Fresh bread and olive oil. A sticky date pudding to finish. Relaxed, abundant, and designed for reaching across the table.

Pricing: What to Expect

Anniversary dinners are among the most detailed private chef bookings I do, and the pricing reflects the level of personalisation involved.

Couples (Dinner for Two)

From €400-€500 minimum booking. The per-person cost would technically be higher for just two guests because the chef's time, travel, prep, and ingredient sourcing are the same whether there are 2 or 8 people at the table. The minimum fee covers a 5-7 course tasting menu, all ingredients, cooking, service, and cleanup.

Small Groups (4-8 Guests)

From €85-€110 per person. Inviting another couple or a small group brings the per-head cost down while keeping the evening intimate. A four-person anniversary dinner with wine pairing is one of the most popular formats I run.

Wine Pairing

Add €25-€45 per person. I'll match Portuguese or international wines to each course. This turns a great dinner into something genuinely special because the pairing is designed specifically for your menu, not pulled from a standard wine list.

What's Included

Everything. Menu consultation, ingredient sourcing from Lisbon's best markets and suppliers, all cooking, professional plating and service, and full kitchen cleanup. You don't lift a finger. The only additions are wine/beverage packages and speciality ingredient upgrades like truffle, wagyu, or lobster.

Best Settings for Anniversary Dinners in Lisbon

The setting matters as much as the food for anniversaries. Here's what works well:

Your Home

The most personal option. Your dining table, your favourite candles, your photos on the wall. There's something powerful about celebrating a milestone in the space where you've built your life together. I cook in your kitchen and serve at your table. Simple, intimate, and meaningful.

A Lisbon Apartment with a View

If you're visiting Lisbon for your anniversary, book an apartment in Alfama, Chiado, or Graca with a river view or a rooftop terrace. The city lights do the decorating. I bring the food. Some of the best anniversary dinners I've cooked have been on small terraces overlooking the Tagus at sunset.

A Villa in Cascais or Sintra

If you want to make a weekend of it, rent a villa. Ocean views in Cascais, forest quiet in Sintra. The space gives you room to set up something genuinely beautiful: a long table in the garden, lanterns on the path, the sound of nothing but your conversation and the occasional cricket.

A Yacht in the Marina

For couples who want something dramatic. A private chef dinner on a yacht moored in Cascais marina, or even out on the water. The compact service style of a tasting menu suits galley kitchens well, and the setting is hard to beat.

The Surprise Factor

About half of my anniversary bookings involve some level of surprise. One partner organises everything and the other walks in to find a beautifully set table, candles lit, and a chef in the kitchen about to serve the first course.

If you're planning a surprise, here's how we handle it:

  • All communication goes through one partner. I use a separate phone or email thread so there's no accidental notification on a shared device.
  • Setup while they're out. The organising partner arranges for their partner to be away for 2-3 hours before dinner. I arrive, prep, and stage everything so it's ready when they walk in.
  • Personalised touches. A printed menu with both names and the date. A dish that references a shared memory. A wine from a significant year. These details cost nothing extra but they're what people remember.

How to Book

The process is straightforward, but anniversary dinners benefit from a bit more lead time than a standard booking:

1. Send an enquiry. Include the date, guest count, location, any dietary needs, and the vibe you're after. If there's a story you want the menu to reflect, share it here. The more detail you give me, the more personal the dinner becomes.

2. Menu consultation. I'll propose a menu based on your preferences and the season. September and autumn menus might feature mushrooms, game, figs, and Portuguese wines that pair beautifully with richer dishes. You review, tweak, and approve.

3. Confirm with deposit. A 30% deposit secures your date. The remainder is due on the day of service.

4. The evening. I arrive, cook, serve, clean, and disappear. You celebrate.

Lead time: 7-10 days minimum. Weekend dates in peak season (May-October) should be booked 2-3 weeks ahead. If you're planning a surprise with special elements, earlier is better.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private chef anniversary dinner cost in Lisbon?

From €85 per person for groups of 4-8 guests, including a multi-course tasting menu, all ingredients, cooking, service, and cleanup. Couples-only dinners have a minimum booking fee of €400-€500. Wine pairing adds €25-€45 per person.

Can a private chef set up a romantic dinner at my Airbnb in Lisbon?

Yes. Private chef anniversary dinners work at Airbnbs, villas, apartments, and terraces across Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Comporta, and beyond. A basic kitchen with a working oven, stovetop, and fridge is all that's needed. The chef brings specialty equipment and handles everything.

How far in advance should I book a private chef for our anniversary?

Book at least 7-10 days ahead. Weekend dates in peak season should be booked 2-3 weeks in advance. Earlier booking allows time for menu customisation, special ingredient sourcing, and surprise coordination.

What kind of menu works best for an anniversary dinner?

Most couples choose a 5-7 course tasting menu. This format showcases a range of techniques and flavours while keeping each course intimate. Chef Justin Jennings specialises in Australian-Asian fusion, but menus are fully customised around your preferences and your story.

Can the private chef help coordinate surprises?

Absolutely. Chef Justin regularly coordinates surprise elements: personalised menus, wine from significant years, dishes referencing shared memories, and timing courses around toasts or gifts. All communication goes through the organising partner.

Does the chef provide table setup and decoration?

Basic table styling is included. For more elaborate setups with candles, flowers, and specialty tableware, the chef can coordinate with local event stylists or recommend trusted suppliers. Many clients handle flowers themselves for a personal touch.
